Flavour Rejects Afrobeats Label, Embraces African Music Identity.

Nigerian music sensation Flavour has made a bold statement, distancing himself from the Afrobeats genre and proudly identifying as an African artist. In a recent interview on The Afrobeats Podcast with Adesope, Flavour responded to the exclusion of his name from lists of Afrobeats’ biggest global exports.

Rather than dwelling on the omission, Flavour asserted that he doesn’t align with the Afrobeats label. He emphasized that his music transcends genre boundaries, drawing inspiration from various African cultural elements. “I am not an Afrobeats artist. I am an African artist,” Flavour declared.

The veteran musician also highlighted the media’s overemphasis on Afrobeats, often neglecting the diverse musical landscape of the African continent. He argued that African music, when considered holistically, must include artists like himself. “Most time, the media just talk about Afrobeats.

They are not talking about African music. If you talk about African music, you have to talk about Flavour,” he stated.
Flavour’s career, spanning over two decades, is marked by numerous hit songs and critically acclaimed albums. His music seamlessly blends Igbo cultural influences with contemporary sounds, offering a unique and authentic listening experience.

The award-winning artist’s recent album, African Royalty, released in December 2023, further solidified his identity as an African music icon. Collaborations with fellow African stars like Fally Ipupa and Diamond Platnumz have also contributed to his global reach and impact.

By rejecting the Afrobeats label, Flavour challenges the narrow categorization of African music. His stance serves as a reminder of the continent’s rich and diverse musical heritage, urging listeners to appreciate the full spectrum of African sounds.
