Get Into the Intimate Visuals for BOJ and Adekunle Gold’s “Love Garden”

The first collaboration between the Nigerian superstars offers a pristine depiction of romantic relationships.

BOJ is an important figure in contemporary Nigerian music. As part of the DRB Lasgidi group, he evolved the alté sound and aesthetic. Over the years he has continued to further his music, mostly by opening himself up to collaborative influences. To that effect, last month he released “Love Garden,” where he paired his everyman sensibilities with those of Adekunle Gold.

Both artists share similar tastes: drawing heavily from folk and R&B, their art form is localized in the most global way, in that they look within themselves to find that which connects the world. The success of “Love Garden” comes from that artistic alliance. The warm production calls upon emotive guitars and its unhurried percussive bass, which works perfectly for two artists who’ve consistently made high art of the mellow love record.

There’s a sufficient groove here too, the rolling rhythms of the drums which should inspire turns of the waist. Essentially, “Love Garden” is a feel good record — and that is the mood the visuals hone into. With scenery of the beach and the musicians having a good time, it takes the viewer behind the gloss and shows them the breezy, intimate side to living and creating, which BOJ and Adekunle Gold embody through their music over the years.

For BOJ, this comes as a well-timed single following the release of the deluxe version of his Gbagada Express album last year. Showcasing his knack for cross-continental hits, the project had paired U.K. acts like ENNY and Knucks with a wide cast of African artists, which included Davido, Obongjayar, Victony and Fireboy DML among many others.

“Love Garden” opens up the path to a new project from BOJ, which is expected later this summer. And with the brilliance showcased here, that project has already shaped up to be one of the more anticipated releases of the period.
