Egypt win rights to host maiden Caf Women’s Champions League

The Confederation of Africa Football on Saturday announced Egypt as the country to host the Caf Women’s Champions League this year.

In March, the African football body had opened the hosting rights bid for member association on Thursday, March 4 before a later extension to April 15 for the women’s club championship which was launched in 2020.

Earlier last September, South Africa expressed an interest to stage the competition, while Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea were also expected to join the race for the club’s tourney bid after their botched Awcon 2022 quests.

On March 31, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation announced through its website that the country has been named the host of the first-ever women’s club tournament. However, Caf refuted the report, noting that it is yet to decide on the host of the coveted tournament.

With Morocco already been earlier awarded the host the expanded 12-nation 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations in 2020, the push for the hosting rights for the women’s club championship came as no surprise.

Following its Caf executive meeting in Kigali, Rwanda, the North African nation was confirmed to stage the inaugural edition of the women’s club competition in November, featuring eight teams.

With Egypt winning the rights to host the club championship in November, the north African soil will host the major women’s football events on the continent as Morocco are expected to organize the 2022 Awcon seven months later.

While the North Africans play host to Awcon for the first time in Morocco next year, they will also become the first ever host of the first-ever women’s club championship on the continent.

Seven teams will qualify for the final tournament through six zonal playoffs to join the champion club from Egypt, who gains automatic qualification, according to the Caf regulations.
